Magnetic Switch Keyboards in 2026: Why Everyone Is Switching

Magnetic switch keyboards are no longer a curiosity. In 2025, they went mainstream. In 2026, they’re becoming the default for gaming keyboards under $100. The shift happened faster than anyone in the mechanical keyboard community predicted.

What Changed

Hall Effect switches use magnets and sensors instead of metal contacts. No physical contact means no debounce delay, adjustable actuation points, and Rapid Trigger – the ability to re-fire a key the instant you release it by a fraction of a millimeter. Competitive FPS players noticed first. Everyone else followed.

The real catalyst was price. Two years ago, a Hall Effect keyboard meant Wooting at $170+. Today, boards from MCHOSE, DrunkDeer, Gamakay, and Royal Kludge start under $40. CES 2026 confirmed the direction – nearly every keyboard vendor showed magnetic switch products, and many are adopting TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) sensors for even higher precision.

The Numbers

YearHE Boards Under $70Major Brands Offering HE
2023~3Wooting, DrunkDeer
2024~12+ Razer, SteelSeries
2025~30+ MCHOSE, Gamakay, Royal Kludge, IQUNIX
202650+Nearly universal

Who’s Leading

Chinese brands own the budget and mid-range segments. MCHOSE sells a 60% Hall Effect board for $35. Gamakay is pushing TMR sensors at the $60 tier. Royal Kludge just launched a full-size 96% HE board. Wooting still commands the premium tier, but their price advantage is gone.

The Western incumbents – Razer, SteelSeries, Corsair – have responded with their own magnetic models, but at $150+ price points that are harder to justify when a $50 Chinese board has the same switch technology.

The Catch

Tom’s Guide made a fair point: magnetic switches are better for gaming than typing. The analog travel and adjustable actuation make them great for WASD, but the typing feel doesn’t match a well-tuned mechanical switch. If you write more than you game, traditional mechanical still has an edge.

Our Take

For gaming-focused desk setups, there’s no reason to buy a traditional mechanical keyboard in 2026 unless you specifically prefer the typing feel. The technology gap is closed, the price gap is inverted, and every major brand has committed to the platform.
